A year long celebration follows, landmarks of which will be the Quartet's performance of seven complete Bartók cycles (The Juilliard Quartet played the first Bartók cycle in America at Tanglewood in 1948) in major cities throughout the U.S. and Japan, beginning with a two-concert cycle at Alice Tully Hall in New York on November 8 and 10. An article celebrating the Quartet's Bartók legacy was composed for the occasion by Andrew Pincus. (To view, see the article on the Juilliard String Quartet website).
In honor of both the Juilliards' 60th birthday and the Shostakovich centennial, Sony BMG Masterworks will release a 2-CD set with new recordings of Shostakovich quartets Nos. 3, 14, 15 and the Piano Quintet with Yefim Bronfman, in stores October 11, 2006. The new recording continues the Juilliard String Quartet's long and distinguished association with Sony Classical that began in 1949. To further celebrate, podcasts and a newly updated catalogue will be featured on iTunes, allowing fans to hear the quartet give a career retrospective and discuss career highlights, as well as the new release.
In addition, the Juilliard Quartet celebrates Mozart's 250th birthday by performing quartets K. 421, K. 428 and K. 465, newly informed by first-edition manuscripts which were donated to the Juilliard School last season.
Further touring in America includes concerts in Philadelphia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, California, Florida, Tennessee, Indiana, North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, stops throughout Texas, and a Bartók cycle at Ravinia. The Quartet will continue their tradition as master teachers with a three-part residency this season at Arizona State University, in addition to their permanent posts as faculty and resident ensemble at New York's Juilliard School. Abroad, the Juilliard Quartet appears in London at Wigmore Hall, Turkey, The Netherlands, Germany, Russia, Finland, the Palau de la Música in Barcelona, Spain, and returns to Japan for a two-week tour at the end of the season.
